We are offering ALL members the opportunity to bring a friend (potential member) to one of our events (trip, special outing, etc.) for FREE. This is a one time only and we hope that the friend will join us too!

Special members are still invited free of charge.

Volunteer Opportunity for Members

The SMART program sends volunteers (age 55+)into public schools to work 1 on 1 with students who need help with their literacy and language skills. The volunteers (who we call mentors)work with the same students (usually for 20 minutes each) once a week for 1 hour during the school year. SMART (Students and Mature Adults Read Together), which started 15 years ago in one school in Yonkers now runs in 35 Schools throughout Westchester County including 6 schools in Mt. Vernon and 1 in Tuckahoe.

Over time wonderful relationships form between student and mentor. The students certainly benefit from this program – but most volunteers say they get more out of it than the kids!
